This One Belongs to God

Place My words on your hearts. Get them deep inside you. Tie them on your hands and foreheads as a reminder. Teach them to your children.
Talk about them wherever you are, sitting at home or walking in the street;
talk about them from the time you get up in the morning until you fall into bed at night.
Deuteronomy 11: 18-19 (The Message)

August 18 was a very special day for our family. Not only was it little Alexander’s five month birthday, but even more so it was the day he was returned to God. His baby dedication service was simple and beautiful, and really meant a great deal to us as we wanted it to be meaningful, purposeful even: A day to dedicate his small life- from the very start- as one to glorify his Creator, through every step he will ever take. Time is short. In his lifetime he won’t have time for some of the ‘detours’ that most of us have made the mistake of taking.

For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers,
against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Ephesians 6:12

It was also a time to solicit prayers and the support of our church family both for Alexander and his walk with the Lord, but also for us, his parents- for wisdom, for patience, for perseverance, to hold us accountable to this most noble task (and gift) that God has so richly blessed us with.

Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not turn from it.
Proverbs 22:6

Alexander’s bedtime song “Come to the Cradle” (by Michael Card) was played as the family made their way to the front of the church- Grandma and Grandpa, Great Grandma, and Nana all came for the special day. Nana had written a beautiful poem (click here to read it) that God might be glorified in this new little life. Grandpa read the scripture reading, and Pastor Benson shared some words of encouragement with us, and prayed for little Alexander, for us, for our church family.

It was potluck week too, and we wanted to dress things up a little bit. As you know, Alexander’s ‘theme’ has been “Little Lamb of God” / “The Lord is My Shepherd” so Serena made some little candle holders for the tables, and Nana put together some simple little daisy arrangements. Instead of a cake, David stayed up wee hours Thursday night making these adorable little sheep cupcakes. It was a joyful time to celebrate this little lamb indeed that God has called us to care for Him- A day to fellowship with those closest to us, and with our Good Shepherd, who will walk beside us each step of this journey together.
